Hmmm,
So I am back with my second post...This one was supposed to be a rhapsody about the Kolkata Knight Riders, but instead is just a motley commentary on the disappointment, that is KKR!
KKR losing matches in the IPL has become as hackneyed as the strategies they come up with against the opposition..So a defeat is not met by much chagrin from me. But today was different, we were up against the bottom crawlers :King's XI, who have been touted as the 'KKR of the 3rd IPL'...a team that can just theoretically hope of making it to the semis, but potentially become party-poopers for the 6 teams that are not as prolific/lucky as the Mumbai Indians.
KKR has had a mixed season as of now, we started off with two consecutive wins…sending all the fans into a state of frenzy and speculation. Some of us even bought jerseys in support of our unexpectedly reciprocative team , started making predictions and speculation about how a repeat of 2009 might take place(in terms of the table turning on its head)…But sadly the lightning doesn’t strike at the same place twice, especially not when your wearing shiny gold helmets and purple armor!!!
The three consecutive losses brought us back to ground reality…some even tore off the KKR logo from their otherwise stylish fan jersey …the others switched advocacy to better performing teams…but we(red-blooded Ganguly supporters) hung on, hoping against all rationale!
I even swore to chop off my hair if KKR won the next match against Kings XI….and WE DID!…finally..my (10 month long) hair was put to good use!!!...We lost the Monday game against Delhi, and I was back looking for disposable parts of my body to put on the line as an offering for the next match!
We won the next match, emphatically, as Dada silenced his critics by hitting a blistering selfless inning of 88 from 54 balls. We had 8 points by the end of that match, still in strong contention for the semi final berth.
Present Day:
Dada won the toss and elected to bat (obviously!),stating that the pitch was gonna slow down as the overs passed and chasing was gonna be arduous…(…umm I don’t know if he had pissed off the curator or something ,because the pitch did nothing of that sort!)
Everyone hoped for Dada to continue his form, and Gayle to live up to his destructive self.
The start was very circumspect, Dada hitting the occasional boundary. Ganguly eventually fell to a brilliant catch by Ravi Bopara off his own bowling (which I say, was a blessing in disguise, because of the consequent portentous over to come).
After the departure of Dada, Kings XI strung in some good economical overs.The very sight of Ramesh Powar plodding and wading at you with a ball in hand must be so darn unsettling..No wonder it was so hard to put him away that easily!They managed to keep the KKR run rate under check!
13 for some is an unlucky number…Well my Dad used to say, ”One man’s defeat is another man’s joy, son!”….Chris Gayle went bonkers and took Ravi for a ride down the ‘Woe para in Kolkata!’…4 consecutive sixes…and all Bopara could do was flash a sheepish grin(he does have amazingly white teeth for an Englishman I must say!)…The 13th over cost 'em 33 runs (an IPL record!)….The Gayle Storm was here!!!
One of the commentators remarked how,
At the start of the tournament,Tom Moody had jet black hair;
But now its grey,it was obviously dyed black;
Because he does after all go a lot of years back;
But lookin at the pathetic condition his team is in, now he just doesn’t care!
The KKR innings powered by Gayle managed to reach a formidable 200.
I was ecstatic…’aajke to KKR jeetbe’…….’200! Kings XI don’t have a chance of even coming close’……’Kings welcome to amokracy’……
I am such an ominous bastard…not only did the Kings XI make me eat my words, I had to swallow my bitten tongue in agony at what was to come!!!
KKR was pretty much decimated by Mahela Jayawardene and his fellow batsmen!!!...At the beginning of the Kings XI chase, clouds had begun to looms over the stadium!...Clouds of rain?..nay..Clouds of an impending disaster!!!
They took us apart from the word GO…they played like they had nothing to lose…carefree, dominating batting by a Mr. Mahela Jayawardene,who would have been overlooked by the selectors,hadn’t it been for a freak injury acquired by Shaun Marsh!
The commentators deem him to be a ‘touch player’…whatever!..He touched the crap out off the KKR bowlers!!!...Almost every bowler was taken to task..the complacent fielding and demeanour of KKR didn’t help them much either!!!...It was ‘Barbo, Charbo, Harbo’ today!!!
The pitch was supposed to slow down…wasn’t it??
I tried switching channels, hoping that it might change our fortune…but the loss was inevitable…Kings XI won by 8 wickets with 8 balls to spare…All their out-of-sorts batsmen coming back to form!...We had done the unexpected!!!
One of my friends earlier had remarked,” Preity Zinta stands mein itni kudti hai, woh agar kud kud ke field pey a jaye to yuvi, lee aur sangakkara se acha cricket khel legi”…She didn’t turn up for this game..Good for the King’s XI I guess..!!!
KKR stand at a funny position in the table..They still have a chance of making it to the semi-finals. Kings XI are gonna have to continue their form against the other teams for that to happen (So,Preity Woman….stay away!!!!) …KKR will also have to win most of their matches from now on, I have some personal belongings which I’m thinking of putting on the line…lets see what transpires!
Thanks, for taking off the inane ‘Main bhi coach’ ads off air!
Its hard being a Kolkata supporter…Harder when ur just a maccher jhol!
